Twitter is another Social media tool that is becoming quite popular these days. Tweets have been used to announce breaking celebrity news, Arab Spring updates from citizens in the middle east, and personal communications between individuals and companies.

Twitter limits the person doing the tweeting to 140 characters of text (including spaces and punctuation), so it is important to be creative and concise when deciding what to say and how to say it.

There are Twitter apps for smartphones making it easy to reach out to or hear from customers from any location.

Like other forms of Social Media, Twitter allows you to build customer loyalty through increased personal interaction. You can monitor what is being said about your company, both good and bad, and respond quickly to any issues that might arise.

The key to successful Twitter use:

  • Have a Plan – make plans to have a designated person or persons monitor Twitter for opportunities to communicate with customers
  • Tweet Regularly – develop a schedule for regular posting of tweets, be it hourly, daily, or weekly. If there hasn’t been a tweet posted in weeks or months, a customer may feel reluctant to engage with you via Twitter, reasoning that a response from you may be days, weeks, or months away, if at all.
  • Tweet Relevant News – much of what gets tweeted on Twitter can be described as irrelevant, wasting the time of the reader. Followers have the tendency to stop following people they find uninteresting. Not everything has to be about selling them a product or service.
