The Instagram app (currently for iPhone and iPad only) allows users to take photos, add filters to an image to produce interesting results, and post them to the Instagram network to be viewed and commented on by Instagramers from all over the world. Other users can post comments about the photos,  follow Instagram members whose photostream they like, and view the popular photos of the moment, in real-time.

How, you may ask, can a photo-sharing social media app help promote my business? Well, Instagram has made it possible for 3rd parties to access via web browsers, inspiring all manner of web-based applications to view and share Instagram content. The obvious businesses who can benefit by using Instagram are photographers – but with some creativity, many others are finding that Instagram is a powerful, inexpensive platform to showcase their business and foster brand loyalty with their customers and fans.

What might that look like? Well, let’s say you have a food truck/catering business. You can post photos of your menu items and include descriptions, announce special events or promotions, and encourage customers to post pictures relating to your business and the experiences they’ve had with you. By adding descriptive tags to the posting, say, #GoodEats, #FridayNiteFoodie, #OrlandoFlTexMex, then these pictures will appear when the descriptive tags are clicked or searched on.
